This volume presents a fresh perspective and new narrative of the origins of psychoanalysis, taking into account social, cultural, and contemporary relational views. Exploring Freud’s unconscious communication and idenwith his patients, Emma Eckstein in particular, the book sheds new light on the logic which informed a number of events central to Freud’s self-analysis, and the theories he formulated to found and establish psychoanalysis.
Divided into three parts, chapters trace how Freud’s oscillations between the reality of trauma and the creative power of fantasies were a direct result of his encounter with and treatment of Emma. Part 1 presents a historireconstruction of the practice of castration in the treatment of hysteric women between 1878 and 1895; Part 2 examines the theories and practice produced by Freud between 1895 and 1896; and Part 3 explores and reconFreud’s self-analysis (1896–1899).
The Cut and the Building of Psychoanalysis argues that Freud’s unconscious communication with Emma provided him with a crucial framework and path for his self-analysis. It will appeal to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and psychologists, as well as historians of medicine and science, social sciand scholars interested in the history of Western thought and the mind in general.

Carlo Bonomi, is supervising analyst at the Harry Stack Sullivan Institute of Psychoanalysis, Florence, Italy, and a faculty member of the Postgraduate School of Psychotherapy of the same Institute. He has taught History of Psyand Dynamic Psychology at the State University of Florence and is a former president of the Centre for Historical Studies of Psychoanalysis and Psychiatry. He is also Founding President of the Sándor Ferenczi Cultural Association.

Questo volume presenta una immagine fresca e una nuova narrativa delle origini della psicoanalisi, prendendo in considerazione la dimensione sociale, culturale e le idee relazionali contemporanee. Carlo Bonomi, è analista supervisore presso l’Istituto di psicoanalisi Harry Stuck Sullivan di Firenze e docente presso la scuola di specializzazione in psicoterapia dello stesso istituto. Ha insegnato Storia della Psicologia e Psicologia Dinamica all’Università degli studi di Firenze, ed è stato presidente del Centro Studi Storici di Psicoanalisi e Psichiatria. È anche Presidente fondatore della Associazione culturale Sándor Ferenczi.

The Relational Perspectives Book Series (RPBS) was launched in 1990 by Stephen A. Mitchell and is presently edited by Lewis Aron and Adrienne Harris. The term relational psychoanalysis was first used by Greenberg and Mitchell (1983) to bridge the traditions of interpersonal relations, as developed within interpersonal psychoanalysis and object relations, as developed within contemporary British theory. But, under the seminal work of the late Stephen Mitchell, the term psychoanalysisgrew and began to accrue to itself many other influences and developments. Various tributaries-interpersonal psychoanalysis, object relations theory, self psychology, empirical infancy research, and elements of contemporary Freudian and Kleinian thought-flow into this tradition, which understands relational configurations between self and others, both real and fantasied, as the primary subject of psychoanalytic investigation.

La Relational Perspectives Book Series è stata fondata nel 1990 da Stephen Mitchell ed è attualmente edita da Lewis Aron e Adrienne Harris. Il termine psicoanalisi relazionale è stato usato per la prima volta da Greenberg e Mitchell (1983) per creare un ponte tra la tradizione delle relazioni interpersonali, sviluppata dalla psicoanalisi interpersonale, e quella delle relazioni oggettuali, sviluppata nell’ambito della teoria britannica contemporanea. A partire dal lavoro seminale dell’ultimo Stephen Mitchell, il termine psicoanalisi relazionale è ulteriormente cresciuto assimilando molti altre influenze. Oltre alla psicoanalisi interpersonale e la teoria delle relazioni oggettuali, la psicologia del sé, la ricerca empirica sul bambino, ed elementi del pensiero Freudiano e Kleiniano contemporaneo sono affluiti in questa tradizione, in cui le configurazioni relazionali tra il sé e gli altri, sia reali che fantasticate, sono assunte come il soggetto primario dell’indagine psicoanalitica.
